The Dreaded Day Arrived...

It happened. I knew it would, I just didn't want it to come. Our son discovered his hands, and that he can put his hands in his mouth. We tried to stop it but yesterday was the day. He realized that his thumb fits nicely in his mouth. Each time I've seen it I've pulled it out. I hope this isn't a new habit...

Just from personal experience, I thought it was such a bad habit for Ethan to develop. He totally was a thumb sucker! Then, I realized he didn't need a binky to be put back in, in the middle of the night. So he ended up sleeping through the night alot sooner than most babies. He would just suck his thumb at night and he'd fall back asleep. Let a thought :)

Some babies suck on their fingers, some on their thumbs. River sucked a little on her thumb when she was just a couple months old as she would fall asleep. She passed right through the phase. Then again, I never gave either of my kids a pacifier so I don't think they had that early tendency to *want* something in their mouths. I wouldn't worry about it yet. It's just their way of becoming familiar and comfortable with their bodies! Rad used to suck on the back of his hand. Weird, eh?

Ya.. be thankful that he discovered that he can suck his thumbs. Now he never needs a binky. On the other hand, if he did suck on a binky, you could ween him off when it was time.

Caleb still sucks his right thumb. It's all wrinkled and gross.. totally mis-shapened from his other thumb. We figure he's a year to two behind, as far as his maturity, so he'll grow out of it.

I sucked my first finger.. not my thumbs.

I don't know what the big deal is....I'm 55 and I suck my thumb. Kari is perfectly OK with it and encourages me to "do my own thing." whenever I can.
