Solids
We started Nico on solids this week. As much as I thought solids would be much easier, it hasn't been very successful. I think he's not quite ready. Instead of swallowing the cereal he just spits it back out -the thrust reflex is still a little too strong. So, I think we might wait a month to try it again. WHO and UNICEF (according to google) strongly recommend waiting until the baby is at least six months old before starting solids. So, in the mean time, does anyone have any suggestions on how to get Nico to take formula? My milk production isn't keeping pace with his needs, yet he refuses to take any formula...

Well, ya can't really blame him ... have you tasted the stuff? It's positively awful!
But you can try a couple different brands if you make sure you buy the smallest containers to avoid wasting it all if he doesn't like it! You can try mixing the formula with your milk, which would probably be easier. Just make sure that you have the formula mixed before combining with breast milk. With mine, it seemed to clump really bad when mixed with breast milk. Of course, if you try using the liquid ready to use formula that probably won't happen.
Also, remember there's no rush to get him on solids. And you don't have to start with cereals. They're not really very tasty. If you try something like pears or sweet potatoes he'll probably *want* to eat! But don't rush him. Their tummies need to be ready and he'll give you queues when he wants something other than Mom's milk.
Good luck!! Sorry this was so long!
Hey Christy, have you tried mixing the formula with breast milk? If he'll take it then start with a little bit and then add more and more formula each time until he'll take a full bottle (or sippy) of formula. Good luck!
hey christy. I am sure that is frustrating...
Lydia has had the opposite problem. She doesn't like the breast milk that I pump. Funny huh? Anyways, I just mix it with formula and then she takes it. But that only works if you are pumping.
She also wouldn't take it if the bottle nipple was cold, so when i warm that up, sometimes she will take straight milk.
By the way, we have tried three different brands of formula; similac, enfamil, and Nestle (all with the DHA/ARA blends) and we think that Lydia takes the Nestle best because it has extra stuff for easy digestion (comfort proteins it says on the canister). good luck!
